Why Wide Cotton Sheeting Is So Useful
Standard dressmaking cottons are often around 112cm to 150cm wide. Sheeting at 183cm gives you a lot more fabric across the width, which makes a real difference on larger projects:
- Bedding without joins: a UK single duvet is 135cm wide, so each side of a single duvet cover can be cut in one piece with room to spare for seams.
- Tablecloths: a generous width means you can cover most kitchen and dining tables with a single length and a simple hem.
- Curtains: wide panels mean fewer seams to match, and the border stripe makes a lovely feature down a leading edge or across the hem.
- Small makes: aprons, peg bags, cushion covers and gift bags are a great way to use up leftovers.
Not sure how much to order? Our guide How Much Fabric Do I Need? walks through curtains, cushions, dresses and quilts. As every order is cut in one continuous length, you can plan your pieces knowing the border stripe will run unbroken.
Making the Most of a Border Stripe
Border prints are fun to design with. A few simple ideas:
- Place the floral band along the hem of a curtain or tablecloth so it frames the whole piece.
- Cut the border section out and use it as a contrast band on a pillowcase or cushion cover.
- Use the lattice section for the main body of an apron and the border for the pocket or ties.
- Mix the cream and yellow versions in one room for a coordinated, country cottage look.
Plush Velour Stretch Jersey in Beige
For dressmakers, the Plush Velour 1 Way Stretch Jersey in Beige is a soft, cosy knit with a short velvety pile on the face and a smooth jersey back. The spandex gives it one-way stretch, so it moves and drapes nicely while holding its shape, and the warm neutral beige is easy to style.
- Clearance price £2.99 per metre (was £9.99)
- Minimum purchase 10 metres, so it suits bulk makes, group projects or makers who sell
- Perfect for bodycon, wrap, skater and maxi dresses, plus tops, skirts, loungewear and tracksuits
- Care: cool gentle wash at 30°C, do not tumble dry, dry flat and do not iron the pile
Velour is a lovely choice for winter loungewear and cosy co-ords. When sewing it, cut all pieces with the pile running in the same direction so the colour looks even, and use a stretch or ballpoint needle so the knit is not snagged.
Grab Them While They Last
